The Hope Station Opportunity Area, located in the borough of Carlisle, is a non-profit entity designed to enhance the quality of life, health, safety, and economic opportunities for the people who live in the neighborhood it comprises.

Though offices and staff are housed here, Hope Station is not just a building. Hope Station is a place in our dreams; a HOPE for our future; a vision that addresses the issues of Memorial Park and surrounding community. The Hope Station Community has a commitment to unity and pride, and embraces the success and diversity of its families.

Hope Station Council's Mission Statement

The Hope Station Opportunity Area serves as a catalyst for neighborhood improvement by collaborating with community members--individuals and organizations--throughout the Carlisle area; creating innovative projects, fostering community development through education, technology, and job opportunities; decreasing crime; and enhancing the quality of life while promoting unity and respecting and celebrating diversity of all kinds.

Equal Opportunity Statement

Hope Station is fully committed to a policy of equal opportunity, and to this end abides by all applicable federal, state, and local laws pertaining to non-discrimination and fair employment practices. Accordingly, the Hope Station recruits, hires, trains, promotes and educates individuals without regard to race, color, national or ethnic origin, religion, age, sex, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. Hope Station administers all personnel action such as compensation, benefits, education, and social and recreational programs without regard to race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin, age, disability, veteran status, sex, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.

Affirmative Action

The Hope Station's affirmative action program is designed to achieve diversity among staff, officers, counselors, and volunteers; to treat all appointments and promotions in a manner free from discrimination; and to correct any under-utilization of women and minorities in employment positions. For that reason, along with the principle of nondiscrimination, Hope Station is committed to a program of affirmative action with regard to members of certain groups as specified by the U.S. Department of Labor. Hope Station, therefore, makes concerted efforts to recruit, employ, and promote qualified members of minority groups, women, handicapped individuals who are otherwise qualified. Hope Station also aims to recruit special disabled veterans, and veterans of the Vietnam era. The president of the council has ultimate responsibility for the implementation of all affirmative action laws, regulations, and guidelines.

The History of Hope Station

Hope Station was launched in 2000 with substantial grant support from first from Allfirst Bank. Now M & T Bank, an institution with a record of supporting revitalization efforts in a variety of other Central Pennsylvania communities, continues to commit to a total of 1 million dollars ($100,000 per year for 10 years) toward the creation and implementation of a comprehensive service plan for the Hope Station Opportunity Area. This plan includes initiatives designed to stimulate job creation, increased levels of home ownership, and a healthier, improved quality of life for residents in the area. With Allfirst's seed money and now M & T's continued monitary support, and with assistance from the Cumberland County Redevelopment Authority, Hope Station works to address the needs and issues of the community residents. The Hope Station Opportunity Area is guided by the Hope Station Opportunity Area Neighborhood Council, a nonprofit organization with 501(c)3 status with a full time Director as well as a full time Deputy Director.( top )
